IVF Failed: What Should You Do Next?
⏱️ 5-MINUTE READ
The call came. Or the blood test result appeared. However you found out—your IVF cycle failed.
Maybe you’re crying. Maybe you’re numb. Maybe you’re angry. Maybe you feel nothing at all.
All of these are normal.
IVF failure is one of the most painful experiences a couple can face. You invested hope, time, money, and your body. And it didn’t work.
But here’s what we want you to know: A failed cycle is not the end of your story. It’s a chapter—a painful one—but not the final page.
This guide walks you through what to do next, step by step.
💔 Step 1: Allow Yourself to Grieve
Before you do anything else—let yourself feel.
What grief after IVF failure can look like:
| Emotion | What It Feels Like |
| Sadness | Crying unexpectedly, feeling heavy |
| Anger | “Why me? Why us? It’s not fair.” |
| Jealousy | Seeing pregnant women or babies feels unbearable |
| Guilt | “Did I do something wrong? Was it my fault?” |
| Numbness | Feeling nothing at all |
| Isolation | Wanting to hide from the world |
All of these are valid.
What NOT to do:
- ❌ Blame yourself or your partner
- ❌ Rush into planning the next cycle immediately
- ❌ Pretend you’re fine when you’re not
- ❌ Isolate completely from support
What TO do:
- ✅ Give yourself permission to grieve
- ✅ Talk to your partner—grieve together
- ✅ Take a few days off if possible
- ✅ Be gentle with yourself
For Filipino couples: In our culture, there’s often pressure to “move on” quickly or to keep pain private. But grief doesn’t follow a timeline. You’re allowed to feel this.
📋 Step 2: Schedule a Cycle Review with Your Doctor
After the initial grief, the most important next step is a cycle review—also called a “WTF meeting” (What To Fix).
When to schedule: Usually 2–4 weeks after the failed cycle, when you’re emotionally ready.
What happens:
- Your doctor reviews your entire cycle in detail
- They explain what happened at each stage
- They identify possible reasons for failure
- They recommend adjustments for next time
Bring your partner. This is a shared conversation.
❓ Step 3: Ask These 10 Questions at Your Cycle Review
Don’t leave your review without asking:
| # | Question |
| 1 | How many eggs were retrieved? How many were mature? |
| 2 | How many fertilized? What was the fertilization rate? |
| 3 | What was the embryo quality? How many reached blastocyst? |
| 4 | Was there anything unusual about my embryos? |
| 5 | What did the uterine lining look like? Was it thick enough? |
| 6 | Was the transfer difficult? Any issues? |
| 7 | What do you think caused this cycle to fail? |
| 8 | What would you change for next time? |
| 9 | Do I need additional testing before trying again? |
| 10 | What are my realistic chances next cycle? |
Write down the answers. You’ll want to remember them later.
🔬 Step 4: Consider Additional Testing
Depending on your cycle review, your doctor may recommend:
| Test | What It Checks | When It’s Recommended |
| ERA (Endometrial Receptivity Array) | Timing of uterine receptivity | Recurrent implantation failure |
| PGT (Preimplantation Genetic Testing) | Chromosomal normality of embryos | Recurrent failure, age 35+ |
| Sperm DNA Fragmentation | Sperm DNA damage | Male factor, recurrent failure |
| Hysteroscopy | Uterine cavity abnormalities | Suspected fibroids, polyps, adhesions |
| Immunology Panel | Immune factors affecting implantation | Recurrent failure with good embryos |
| Chronic Endometritis Test | Hidden uterine infection | Recurrent implantation failure |
Not everyone needs all these tests. Your doctor will recommend based on your specific history.
🔄 Step 5: Decide Your Next Move
After your review and any additional testing, you have options:
| Option | When It Makes Sense |
| Try again with same protocol | If failure was likely due to chance |
| Try again with adjusted protocol | If there were identifiable issues |
| Try with add-ons (ICSI, PGT, ERA) | If specific problems were found |
| Consider donor eggs | If egg quality is the primary issue |
| Take a break | If you need time emotionally or financially |
| Explore other paths | Adoption, foster care, child-free living |
There is no “right” answer. Only what’s right for you.
⏰ Step 6: How Long Should You Wait Before Trying Again?
Physically: Most doctors recommend waiting 1–3 menstrual cycles before another IVF cycle. This allows your body to recover.
Emotionally: This varies. Some couples want to start immediately. Others need months. Both are okay.
Financially: Consider the cost of another cycle. If finances are tight, a break may be necessary—not a failure.
💑 Step 7: Prepare Emotionally for Your Next Cycle
If you decide to try again:
Do:
- ✅ Set boundaries with family and friends about what you share
- ✅ Consider counseling (individual or couples)
- ✅ Join a support group
- ✅ Plan something to look forward to outside of IVF
Don’t:
- ❌ Expect the next cycle to feel easier
- ❌ Put your entire life on hold for IVF
- ❌ Compare your journey to others
🌸 When to Consider a Second Opinion
Sometimes, a fresh perspective helps.
Consider a second opinion if:
- Your doctor can’t explain why the cycle failed
- You feel rushed into another cycle without answers
- You’re considering a major protocol change
- You’ve had multiple failed cycles at the same clinic
At Alpha Fertility Centre Philippines, we offer comprehensive cycle reviews for couples who want a second opinion. We’ll review your records, explain what happened, and give you honest recommendations—with no pressure.
💬 A Message of Hope
IVF failure is devastating. We won’t pretend otherwise.
But here’s what we’ve seen in our years of helping Filipino couples:
Many couples who experience failure eventually succeed.
Sometimes it takes a protocol change. Sometimes it takes additional testing. Sometimes it takes a different clinic. Sometimes it takes donor eggs. And sometimes—it just takes another try.
The path is not linear. But it’s still a path.
